Fast becoming one of the most popular racket sports in the world, pickleball brings together some of the best elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis, into a fun and exciting game for people of all ages and abilities.
Played on a court the same size as a badminton court – and using a shorter tennis-style net – players use paddles to hit a plastic ball between one another. You can play as both singles and doubles, and it’s a great way to exercise with friends and family or meet new people.
While there are many similarities with tennis, there are some key differences. For example, the ball must bounce once on each side before you can volley and you can’t play volleys from inside the kitchen sink (a marked-out area close to the net).`
The compact Pickleball court is only the quarter of the size of a tennis court, dimensions are 60 feet x 30 feet compared to tennis court dimensions which are 114 feet x 56 feet meaning if you are short of space, you can still have a court to play on all year round on a smaller plot of land.
The spec for a Pickleball courts play area is 44 feet (13.41m) long and 20 feet (6.09m)
across. On either side of the net there are:
- right and left service areas, both 15 feet (4.57m) long and 10 feet (3.05m) across
- a non-volley zone (also known as 'the kitchen') that runs across the full width of the court and is 7 feet (2.13m) long from the net.
The height of a pickleball net should be 34 inches (86.36cm) at the centre and 36 inches (91.44cm) at the sides.
No fence is required for a Pickleball court, unless you want one!
